Excerpt from Annual Reports of the President and Treasurer to the Trustees: With Accompanying Documents, for the Year Ending June 30, 1903 To the Trustees: The annual report upon the condition and needs of the University is herewith submitted, as required by the Statutes, together with the reports of the several officers of administration and sundry other documents and records bearing upon the activities of the University for the year ending June 30, 1903. Almost without exception these reports and documents will be found to contain recommendations and statements of fact which deserve the careful attention of the Trustees or of an appropriate committee. During the year each of the three corporations included in Columbia University, as the term is popularly used, has been made the recipient of generous and most welcome gifts. The Trustees of Columbia College have entered into an agreement, dated April 10, 1903, and executed on July 20, 1903, with Mr. Joseph Pulitzer of New York, to establish and maintain a School of Journalism as one of the professional schools of the University, for which purpose Mr. Pulitzer gives to the Trustees the sum of $1,000,000 now, and will give a further sum of $1,000,000 when he is satisfied that for three years the School has been in successful operation.
